Shrieks of glee in a fool's paradise

This cartoon is from yesterday's edition of the Dominion Post. Of course, for a person in my position, with a freehold house and money in the bank, these "fish" are nothing to rejoice over. A few days ago, one of my investments — $10,000 at 8.1 percent — matured and was reinvested (with $5000 added to it) at 3.75 percent. And interest rates could easily fall to almost zero.

A surfeit of stimulation

The above cartoon is from last night's edition of the Manawatu Standard in Palmerston North.

How many more "stimulus packages", both here and abroad, are we going to read about? And will any of them have the desired effect — whatever that is? If their aim, as some observers have suggested, is simply to reinflate the bubble, they will set us up for another crash.

Savers feel the lash

The above cartoon is from the Manawatu Standard of January 30, 2009. I really appreciate these "borrowers-versus-savers" cartoons, by a cartoonist who must, himself, be a saver. I hate to think about the interest rate I will get when I next have to renew one of my term deposits.
